The Basics- The Chill plan
Day 1: Colorado->Ketchum, ID. Camp at Warm Springs road, enjoy hot springs.
Day 2: Ketchum-> Sawtooth NRA backcountry via Redfish Lodge shuttle
Day 3: Monte Verita Attempt/Down-day
Day 4: Hike out, camp in Stanley, ID
Day 5: Stanley, ID -> Seattle, WA, arrive at new home! Do laundry, rest, and recover.

Day 1

  • Depart Lafayette, CO as early as humanly possible... and drive 11 hours, and 12 minutes (755.6 miles), to Ketchum, Idaho. Roughly 12 hours, so 6 AM departure= 6 PM arrival.
  • Set up a tent at Warm Springs Road...(A left right before you leave town on Main St.)
    • "For the Ketchum area, there's also a fair bit of undeveloped camping out Warm Springs road, a couple miles past the Red Warrior trailhead (which is sweet)", and then go on to Frenchman's Bend Hot Springs.

idahohotsprings.com

  • That Night:
    • Frenchman's Bend Hot Springs: 7 miles out Warm Springs Road located on the west side of the road. Public use from 4am to 10pm, bathing suits required; no alcohol; no glass containers and parking is restricted to a designated parking zone.

And then...to the Sawtooths!

    Day 2

    • Head up towards Stanley, Idaho, to the Redfish Lake Lodge.
    • Take the Redfish Lake Shuttle to cut off 5 miles from the hike to Upper Baron Lake.
      • The Redfish Lake Lodge- Shuttle Service!   "In a 10 minute boat ride, you will be at the main trail head of the Redfish drainage. We cater to multi-day and day trip hikers. Our shuttle leaves the lodge dock on demand with two or more guests from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm, 7 days a week from the first day to the last day of  our season.  (Hours are reduced after Labor Day and mid-day shuttles are run on demand or by reservation.  Please call the front desk for specific post Labor Day schedule). SHUTTLE PRICING: $10.00 one-way or $16.00 for a round trip for adults"
    • Backpack for the night at Upper Baron Lake, Alpine Lake, or any of the other cool-looking spots if my leg isn't feeling it.  Head towards Monte Verita Peak:
      • "From the Grandjean Trailhead: 12.1miles and 5902 feet gain (one way) From the Redfish Lake Trailhead: 13.3miles and 5849 feet gain (one way)
      • "From the Redfish Creek area follow the trail past Goat Perch and Mt. Heyburn to Flatrock Junction. From here the trail turns off and climbs up to Alpine Lake and just underneathThe Eagle's Beak, one of the best intro technical climbs in the range. Climb past Alpine Lake up to Baron Pass and descend to Upper Baron Lake."

                                             Day 3

Admire Monte Verita peak. If I am feeling awesome and injury free-- attempt Monte Verita.

Summitpost: Monte Verita Class 4 Scramble
East Face (Class 4)- this route provides the easiest ascent, and it starts at one of the most spectacular lakes in the Sawtooths, Upper Baron Lake.  From the southwest edge of the lake, follow a gully between a tree covered area and a stacked boulder field southwest for about 2/3 of a mile to around 9010 feet. From here, skirt south of some steeper slopes that make up the prominent and sheer NE towers that sit above Baron Lake. Turn north and find the only non technical slot that leads to the northeast ridge proper.  The slot narrows, but never becomes more than easy class 4. Just under the NE ridge, a sheer smooth cliff blocks your way. Turn more toward the west and climb over mostly solid slabs and rocks to the summit ridge.  There are at least 4 prominent rock towers on this spectacular ridge and route finding is crucial here unless you want to visit them all.  The northern most tower is called the Perforated Pinnacle. The high point of Monte Verita Peak is the southern most pinnacle that hides behind another tower just north of it. This tower is just a few feet shorter than Monte Verita Peak.  To access the true high point tower, scramble southwest over solid smooth slabs and just east of the ridge. Find a small notch and reach up to touch the highest point. The last sections are the most exposed, but the rock is really solid.  Look for the newly placed summit canister and small cairn (09/08).  As of this writing there was no sign of prior ascent.

    Caltopo map of the area

                                 Day 3/4:
    • Head back down to the Redfish Lake Lodge (remember, the shuttle stops at 8 PM and the pickup must be arranged ahead of time!).
    • Camp outside of Stanley, Idaho.

                                Day 4/5:
    • Stanley, ID-> Seattle, WA.

Things to do: Incredibly Tall Bridge

"The Vance Creek Railway Bridge sits abandoned over a small tributary of the Skokomish River."

Getting There: A Google search of "Vance Creek Viaduct Trail, Shelton, WA" takes you to the longer (4 mile RT) trail, which is supposedly more scenic and generally better than a 1-mile round trip option.
